The Clevelander gets its name from the fact that its original owners, the Ratner family, were Clevelanders from Ohio. The architect, Albert Anis, had been born in Miami but had designed many Art Deco buildings in Chicago in the 1920s. He was well-placed to enjoy the 1930s boom in his home city.
